Preparing for Your First Appointment at Get Adjusted Chiropractic

Get Adjusted Chiropractic is always excited to welcome new patients into our office to begin their journey with Chiropractic care. Our team at Get Adjusted Chiropractic has been taking thorough COVID-19 precautions in order to ensure all of our patients (new and returning!) get the most out of their visits.

Seeing a new doctor can be daunting — Dr. Justin Lewis outlines the most important information to know ahead of your first appointment.

How should a patient prepare for an adjustment?
"Ahead of your visit at Get Adjustment Chiropractic, we ask that you do not try anything 'new' 24 hours prior to your appointment," explains Dr. Justin Lewis. "We want to see our patients in their natural form, functioning as you would normally every day. This allows us to see how your body normally moves without any outside variables influencing your abilities or function."

What is pertinent to a patient's medical history?
"To effectively help you through any current pain or injury, it's important that we understand your medical history," says Dr. Justin Lewis. "We will spend some time during your first appointment at Get Adjustment Chiropractic collecting information on your medical history. We will want to know of any major surgeries, medical conditions (including cancer), past and current medications, car accidents, and work injuries. If you've had X-Rays in the last two years, we will also need to note that information."

How much family history do you need?
Dr. Justin Lewis suggests having a well-rounded understanding of your family's medical history as well as your own — "Knowledge of your direct family's medical background is vital. Please know if anyone in your immediate family lineage suffers from diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions, neck and back pain, or other relevant symptoms.

Musculoskeletal conditions are particularly important for us to know about! Musculoskeletal pain affects the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. It can be acute, with a rapid onset with severe symptoms, or chronic and long-lasting. Musculoskeletal pain can be localized in one area or widespread. Lower back pain is the most common type of musculoskeletal pain we see."

What about attire? Does it matter what the patient wears?
"We want all of our patients to get the most out of their appointment at Get Adjusted Chiropractic, so please wear something comfortable!" states Dr. Justin Lewis. "Feel free to wear activewear clothes."

What should a patient bring to the appointment?
"Other than this knowledge of your medical history, all you will need to bring to your appointment is your license or ID and your insurance card," says Dr. Justin Lewis. "The patient should also bring comfortable clothing if you are coming from work or another appointment. Your clothing should allow for full normal range of motion during an exam and treatment. Items like jeans would limit possible ranges of motion."

What do you typically ask the patient in an appointment?
"I want to understand your daily routine and experience with Chiropractic care or treatments," explains Dr. Justin Lewis. "If so, I'd like to know what you've tried and to what success — from Physical Therapy, Acupuncture, or meeting with your primary care physician. We are also very interested in a person's job and their normal routine to help identify certain aspects that may affect or inhibit a person's posture.

I'll also ask questions about any recent injuries or accidents you may have had, in addition to your regular exercise routine. I will always allow time for your questions, as well, so please bring any and all questions you may have!"
